We're happy to announce the publication of ten images hot off the press, resulting from a brand-new collaboration with the American absract painter, sculptor and photographer Matt Magee, whose work poetically explores visual mapping systems, repetition and sequencing, often using a personal language of dots and dashes that suggest Morse code.
Magee, who spent two decades working as Robert Rauschenberg's chief photo archivist, refers to himself a “hunter-gatherer of images.” Several large-scale, graphic compositions in stone lithography, including Constellations, Madrigal I, II and III, and Green Excavation, evoke his minimalist paintings and depict a rhythmic, intuitive mapping language. In contrast, his Topologies are transformations of aerial iPhone snapshots. Produced in the form of lithographic photogravures, they recall the color and texture of graphite drawing. Together they reflect his personal, poetic and warm brand of abstraction.
Matt Magee, who was born in Paris and raised in Texas, obtained his MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He was awarded two resident fellowships (2007 and 2015) at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, and was recipient of a New York State Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2002 and of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 1991. In January 2020, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University acquired his work for its permanent collection.
