C’est chez un libraire et antiquaire parisien que nous tombons sur une édition de 1911 du Livre des mille nuits et une nuit, d’après une traduction française du Docteur J-C Mardrus. C’est le coup de foudre — nous achetons l’ensemble et entamons un work-in-progress minutieux : il s’agit de débrocher les 8 volumes pour les convertir en une série de livres d’artiste en 6 volets. Sicilia intervient sur les pages originales, ajoute des folios supplémentaires sur papier japon, ne laissant parfois que des bribes de texte lisibles. L’objet ne se veut pas une illustration littérale du manuscrit mais plutôt une évocation de son parfum.

Lives and works in Madrid and Majorca.

Working with Sicilia has been an incredible and profound journey: over 300 works since 1986, more than any other artist I have worked with. Demanding, daring, a dreamer, he has pushed me to explore many new techniques – we have plunged prints in a bath of beeswax; dipped a lizard’s feet in ink and let him run loose on top of a litho stone; replicated an enormous ancient rug on plaster blocks, which we showed at the Louvre; printed on the fragile pages of an old book to produce a new one; invented a technique for running freshly cut flowers through the press, so the delicate colour traces become a metaphor for fading beauty....
