Anne et Patrick Poirier
Anne Poirier, born in 1942 in Marseille.
Patrick Poirier, born in 1942 in Nantes.
They live and work in Lourmarin.
Our first collaboration with the legendary French artists’ duo Anne and Patrick Poirier, a spectacular hand-colored triptych printed in lithography. Both Anne and Patrick were born during World War II, and their work evokes the fragility of civilizations and cultures, often in sculptures or images of fragments, ruins or, as in this project, catastrophes.
We began our discussions several months before the Covid pandemic, with the idea of appropriating, enlarging and reproducing woodcuts from a book published in the late nineteenth century, one of numerous volumes from their private collection depicting phantasmagorical scenes and planetary disasters. Three landscapes were chosen, onto which the artists used red acrylic to hand paint three words in Ancient Greek referring to the origins of the world; on the left, Arché (Arkhè), the beginning, origin or source; in the center: Chaos (Kháos) the mythological void, a divine primordial condition preceding the creation of the universe; and on the right, Erebus (Érebos), the offspring of Chaos, the personification of darkness, the black of night.
This CHAOS triptych is currently being presented at the entrance of their retrospective exhibition “La mémoire en filigrane” at the Musée de Sérignan in southern France, which opened on October 10 and runs through March 20, 2022.
